5th Grade Choice Board


DIRECTIONS:  Choose at least 10 assignments (two or three from each category.)  You have two weeks to complete your work. Staple your work to the choice board and you can turn in when you return to school.  


READING

WRITING

MATH 

SCIENCE 

Read a book and practice reading it with fluency. Record yourself reading  OR

* Log- in to      raz-kids.com. Record yourself reading and send it to the teacher. 

Write a Narrative story about your life. This is a true story about something you experienced in the first person (use “I”, “my”, and “me”). Must be at least one page long

Be the Teacher - Teach someone in your family how to add fractions with different denominators.  Create different problems for them (like adding mixed numbers, and subtracting fractions). 

Two trees - Go outside and choose two different trees.  Pay attention to things such as their leaves, branches, bark, blossoms, roots, etc.  Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting their similarities and differences.

Create a Story Arc for a favorite book or movie

 

Include:  

  • Exposition
  • Rising tension
  • Climax
  • Turning point
  • Resolution


Choose one of the writing

prompts and write for

15 minutes.

1. If you could have any animal for a pet, what

would it be? Describe the pet and how you

would take care of it.

2. Which superpower would you most like to

have-- invisibility, super strength, or the ability to fly? Describe what kinds of things you would do with your powers.

Outside Math - Choose a natural item outside in a certain place to count each day. (for example, leaves on your front porch).    Keep track of that number each day and see how the amount changes over time. After several days, make a bar graph of the data.


Inside Math - Choose a specific color, and go around your house counting how many things of that color you can find.  Choose a different color to count each day. After several days, make a bar graph of the data.

Conservation - Find examples of how the following is happening in your home:


Wasting too much fresh water!

Purchasing too much plastic!

Buying too many unnecessary items!

Parts of the yard that are not eco-friendly!

Using too much electricity!

Read a Nonfiction book or article and write down at least  5 FACTS you learned. This can be from a newspaper,

Magazine, or website.

*Include the TITLE

Write a Narrative fiction story. This is a made-up story with fictional characters. Must be at least one page long

What three consecutive even numbers have a sum of 738?

 

The sum of Mary’s age and her mother’s age is 36. Mary’s mother is 5 times older than Mary.  How old is each person?

Write a script for a commercial about conservation in your home (from the ideas above).  Then perform it for your family.

Write a reflection about your

independent reading book.

Write a letter to your teacher

Another Riddle

A cuckoo clock cuckoos once at 1 o’clock, twice at 2 o’clock, 3 times at 3 o’clock, and so forth.   How many times does it cuckoo each day?

Create a song about cells (or any other science topic you like).  Then sing it to your family until it drives them crazy.
